Oaks have spirally arranged leaves, featuring a lobed edge in many species; some have entire leaves with a smooth or toothed edge. The flowers are catkins that appear in spring . The fruit is an achene, called acorn, fixed in a structure called cupule; Each acorn contains one seed (rarely two or three) and takes 6 to 18 months to mature depending on the species.

Acorns can be consumed by humans (see acorn puree). Acorns are used to make flour, roasted as a substitute for coffee beans or fermented to make a sparkling drink (acorn pint). Acorns are also eaten by wild or domestic animals: squirrels, deer, wild boars who are very fond of them. However, they are harmful to equines.

Acorns are used in Spain to feed pigs which are used to make bellota ham.
